Exchange of practices in investigative journalism between Macedonia and Romania

The Centre for Civil Communications in collaboration with the Romanian Centre for Investigating Journalism (RCIJ) conducted the first phase of the project “Overcoming corruption: Exchange of experiences and best practices in investigative journalism in Romania and Macedonia”. In the period between 03-05.10.2008, in Ohrid, 10 journalists from national and local Macedonian media participated at the training for progressive journalist techniques in support of fight against corruption.

Through interactive lectures and practical work, Paul Radu and Stefan Candea, both trainers in CRJI, were teaching methods and tools that are used in investigative journalism. They also helped in improving skills for comprehensive and precise investigation. During the training journalists accomplished knowledge and ability that will be useful for them in their job, especially in collecting data, working with databases, using open sources and creating personal journalistic archives

Finally, in the end of the training they discussed about some possible corruption topics that can be investigated. They talked about working conditions in the Romanian media and their experience, before the internship in some of them. Some of the topics will become investigative stories, and will be published in Macedonian media.

Representatives from the Kosovo’s Organization for democracy, anticorruption and dignity also attended the training, and took part in the discussion in order to achieve stronger relations between investigative activities in the region.

Before completing the project, an informal network of investigative journalists will be created. The network will have a key role in promoting and development of investigative journalism in Macedonia
